Atmosphere Regolith Vegetation ARVE
Dr. Shawn Koppenhoefer
IT/IS expert experienced in web administration (PHP/CCS/Javascript/Jahia/Moodle/PHPBB/wiki), network administration (TCP IP/VPN/VNC/wifi/WEP/WPA etc.), system administration (Mac OS Server/Unix/(Windows)), user-support (including teaching), database development & management (PostgreSQL (PL/PGSQL)/MySQL/(Oracle)) and software development (Unix/Mac/iPhone)(Objective-C/Fortran)(Rails/PHP).
Shawn provides essential support for the ARVE research group, managing the Mac(Unix) systems and group servers, modifying the systems to improve efficiency, reliability, and security, performing backup and maintenance, developing the website, managing the Kerberos infrastructure, monitoring the network and CPU use, providing 3rd level support (Hardware, Software, and Applications), watching over the SAN filesystem and configuring the AFP file sharing, resolving problems involving TCP/IP DNS and DHCP, creating shell-scripts, doing scientific programming of the climate & population databases, and environmental modeling applications while contributing to the research efforts in climate-modeling and studying anthropogenic influences on the terrestrial biosphere.

Originally from Canada, born in 1968, Shawn completed a double-honours degree (BSc in 'Computer-Science' and 'Combinatorics & Optimization' 1990) at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Waterloo. Six years later, at the EPFL while teaching the 1st-year course Introduction to Networks and Protocols, he published his doctoral thesis (PhD in Computer-Science
). He then became 1st assistant in the Electrical Engineering Dept. at EPFL exploring telecommunication-architectures (
), developed relational databases at Charles Veillon S.A., worked on e-government applications (civilian and military) at Networkers S.A., performed system-administration/teaching/web-development at the World Health Organization collaborating center GFMER in Geneva (LINK), briefly became the IT Director at GIERTD/GFMER, worked independently developing iPhone applications (EXAMPLE), and finally returned to the EPFL as IT admin. and database developer.

IT Admin & User-support
Administration of OS X Server (3 XServes) & Clients (10 stations) + user-support + software maintenance/update, configuration of AFP & NFS, wiki (Docuwiki and Apple wiki), Jahia, mailing-lists, file-backup/restore (BRU), purchasing & inventory (accred:Sesame), guest management IT (trouble-shooting Mac/Windows + access EnClair + config TCP/IP/wireless + hardware maintenance), development & administration of website (PHP/JQuery/Jahia/CSS), script development (bash, sh, R, (Python)), database administration (Postgres with PostGIS extension), software version control (CVS/Hg/Git), user profile mangement (Bash), SSH, VNC, VPC, social network presences (FB, YouTube, Twitter) and more.
PostgreSQL database & R statistical development
Developing DBB queries in PostgreSQL and scripting the stats environment R so as to better parametrize the weather-generator developed by the ARVE collaborators. Extending the techniques for simulating daily values of precipitation, maximum and minimum temperatures, and solar radiation with a combination of Markov chain and curve fitting to better parametrize the gamma distribution function, and quadratic equations, for rainfall distribution in the Fortran simulators. Generation of visually communicative graphs & maps of statistical results and curve fitting.
